Telephones edged the 5 setters to gain a creditable draw against Taverham A. Sandeep Nene played well for the visitors to win 2 games, along with Andy Calver. Mark Ring and Jeremy Cocks replied with a brace for Phones and at 5-4 to Taverham it was left to Telephones to take the doubles with plenty of nets and edges to secure the draw.

Jonathon Batchford for Briston notched his second win of the season overcoming Steve Barrett in 4 ends. Week on week Briston results continue to improve. If given the chance Jonathon would continue to improve if Briston could stay in the top flight. Paul Barrett running very hot at the moment Paul Brown slowing down? but still to good for Briston both with maximums.

In a very close and competative match Wensum A took the win. Ryan Collins starred for Wensum with a maximum. Philip Logsdon slowly getting back to fitness showed some good form with 2 singles wins. Probably match of the night was him comeback against Lauren 2-0 down and 7-1 down in the third, he somehow pulled his game to-gether to get home 11-9 in the fifth.

Firstline Factors took Foxwood C all the way with Peter Wright taking the prized scalps of Trevor Cockburn and Adam Smith. Foxwood had to rely on the doubles to secure victory and keep their promotion hopes alive.

Hellesdon YCOB drew with Nuorder B 5-5.
An excellent contest between 'old rivals' with the points being correctly shared. All players getting on the scoresheet with some entertaining ties. With Hellesdon building up a 4-2 lead it was left to Nuorder's John Willliams to come back from 0-2 in games to beat Francis Webb. Nuorder moved into a 5-4 lead after Andy Broughton beat Mel Humphries and Lawrence Caley defeated John Howlett. Humphries and Howlett secured the draw with an excellent doubles performance. A sporting hard fought and even contest.

Panthers lost to Wensum C 2-8.
Wensum proved too strong for Panthers. Jason Evans was on top form and never really threatened. Peter Mathieson had a rare off night and though Mel Rooney played well to win two singles for Panthers it was not eniough to get a point.

Taverham B lost to Hellesdon YCOB 3-7.
Francis Webb produced an excellent display for Hellesdon against a strong Taverham B side in securing a win and three points. After saving match points in the third set against Martyn Cook to edge home in five, Francis was on the back foot after losing 1-11 in the first against Stewart Lines only to claw his way back and come out on top, winning 11-4 in the decider. Another good team effort from Hellesdon to maintain their recent good form. Stewart Lines was the pick of the home side with some stylish attacking shots on both forehand and backhand.

Usual competitive game between these two sides. After two five set games were shared, Nuorder took a 4-2 lead only for Sands to level at 4-4. Andy then beat Phil in a five setter before Sands won the doubles to clinch a share of the points.

An evening of entertaiming competitive table tennis was eventually won by the ever resilient Remploy. Inflicting a narrow 6-4 win over S.F.C being S.F.C.'s 2nd loss of the season. Stalwart man of the match Doug Ratcliffe for playing through the pain threshold of a calf strain.

Rosebery Road MYC lost to Remploy A 3-7.
Slow start by Ross against Barry, 1-7 dpwn in the first then took next 12 points to lead 2-0 in second. Richard v Doug, a long match which could have gone either way. Vernon never in match against Geoff. Colin would have beaten George on another occasion but a telling edge for George at 8-9 against serve made the differnence in the fifth. Ross and Richard should have won doubles being points ahead in first & third leges which they lost. Despite score second doubles also close. Games 7 & 8 also traded point for point both won in fifth by RR. Game 9 Vernon v Barry should have gone to 5 sets but claimed by Barry in four. Colin v Geoff, losing first 15-17 seemed to dishearten Colin who was unlucky to lose in three. Another evening of good table tennis played in spotting atmosphere, most enjoyable if nail biting to watch Eric Steward

Table Tennis News for Evening News 27.1.10

In the Grant Matthewson Norwich & District Table Tennis League, Wensum A with an impressive 9-1 win over Wensum B2 have opened up a 5 point gap at the top of Premier A and in their current form look to be unstoppable in bringing the title to the Wensum club. Lauren Spink and Ryan Collins are both having an excellent season, ably supported by Tony Zeqiri, enjoying his first season in the top flight.  Current favourites for runners up are former champions Foxwood A if Jon Cockburn plays more regularly. They gained maximum points this week over Wensum B2 helped by an impressive maximum from Andy Hawes.

Foxwood C keep up the pressure at the top of Premier B after two more victories. Their win at the Miller Hall against Nuorder A was marred by a slippery floor with several games not played. Sands B and Nuorder B fought out a draw with all players getting on the scoresheet, Andy Broughton’s five set win against Sands Phil Clarke proving decisive. Peter Mathieson was again in dominant mood with a maximum in Panthers’ 7-3 win at Telephones. High flying Taverham A were brought down to earth when losing 4-6 to Hellesdon, despite an impressive singles maximum from Andy Parker. In Division 1 Andy Bonham and his CEYMS boys were ecstatic to gain a win over Ex Choristers.  Andy scored a maximum, although Barry Graver, fresh from retirement, pushed him all the way.  Excellent win for Fairfields A over Gothic C as Eric Thornton beat an out- of- form, Alan Hough. Joe Taplin came to the rescue for Gothic, with a comfortable maximum.  Despite some great games with 5 of them going to 5 sets, Fairfield A lost 2-8 to Telephones B for whom Dom Clark and Paul Broome scored maximums Foxwood D strengthened with the inclusion of Carl Matthewson overwhelmed Millermen 8-2 to maintain pole position in Division 2.  NCC surprised Choppers 6-4 gaining a welcome 3 points.  Telephones C continued their good run with a hard-earned 7-3 victory over Remploy A for whom Roy Hatton won both singles. Ex Choristers 'B' continue to lead Divison 3 with a 6-4 win over Dynamic Rams . Paul Rumsey and David Beane won the last two singles in a close fought match to take the 3 points.  Thorpe St Andrew returned after a 5 week layoff and secured a 4 pointer against a plucky Gamblers side who fought all the way on the night but faltered 9-1. Easton swamped Taverham 'D' 10-0 to add only a second defeat for the Taverham side this season, and showed the potential for a top position finish. In Division 4, having lost the first half fixture 9 - 1, Newton Flotman B went into a 5 - 2 lead, but Foxwood E youngsters Sam Thompson and Zane Axten, in excellent form, helped stage a fightback to earn a 5 - 5 draw. Taverham E took full advantage of the lack of Shelly Telly numbers 1 and 2 to score a maximum point 10-0 win in this week 15 fixture. Wensum G returned to winning ways in their match with UEA E scoring an 8-2- victory. In his league debut Stuart Edwards gained a maximum with wins over Steve Spittle and John Schofield. Wendy Durrant

In the Grant Matthewson Norwich & District Table Tennis League, Foxwood A moved into third place in Premier A with two 10-0 wins over Gothic A and CEYMS B.  Jon Cockburn only playing in his third match in 8 months took time to settle but improved over both the matches to win all his games. His availability in the second half of the season could be key to Foxwood's title aspirations. Ryan Collins starred for Wensum A as they continued on their march to the title with an impressive 8 -2 win over their B side for whom Owe Karlsson was the only winner, including the notable scalp of Lauren Spink, her first defeat of the season. Sean Molloy inspired Wensum B2 to a 7 3 victory over Hospitals A with a fine maximum including the doubles.  Kevin Gray making a rare appearance for Hospitals ensured Wensum did not have it all their way with fine wins over Frank Hayward  & Chris Jones. At the half way stage of the season Wensum C, Foxwood C and UEA head the Premier B table with UEA maintaining their 100% record and firm favourites to take the title. Matt Haynes of UEA is the leading player with team mate Sam Collins not far behind. Wensum C and Foxwood C will probably be left fighting for the runners up spot. At the other end of the table Taverham B and Firstline Factors are making valiant efforts to keep out of the relegation zone. In Division 1, Dale Ajeto maintained his 100% singles record helping Wensum D beat CEYMS 8-2, with the two Andy's, Bonham and Tuddenham taking a game each.  Fairfield A, without Eric Thornton, struggled against Briston D,for whom Lindsay and Julie Horstead won all singles.  The Returners avenged their season opening defeat against Gothic C with a convincing 8-2 victory. James Skilleter was in commanding form taking all 3 singles in straight sets. Jason Peck also completed an unexpected maximum.   Alan Hough and Peter Holland both beat the unlucky Aaron Hacon, who took both to deuce in the fifth sets.Foxwood D were made to fight against lowly NCC to maintain top spot in Division 2 with a 5-5 draw.  SFC lost ground with their second defeat to Remploy A who enjoyed a good run of results elevating them to 4th position.  Telephones C with two victories pushed themselves up to 5th but Wensum E with three defeats in a row are down to 6th.

In Division 3 Taverham 'D' worked the double over Dynamic Rams scoring 7-3 at both meetings. Highlight of the match was the game between young Tom Baldock-Yaxley and the unbeaten Steve Gurton. Tom played well beyond his years to lose narrowly 11-8 in the third game and pushed Steve throughout. Easton took the scalp of division leaders Ex Choristers 'B' with two good brace of wins for Neil Baxter and Jack Harrowing. However the choir boys bounced back in the next week to beat the Wensum 'F' youngsters 9-1

In Division 4 Wensum G drew with Newton Flotman B, with Chris Cockburn the leading player for Wensum, and Fairfield B also drew with Foxwood E for whom Brian Beck only just lost to Nick Harris and then beat Andy Roberts in 3. Newton Flotman B's John Williams was the only winner as his team went down 2-8 to Fairfield B. Wendy Durrant

Chris Durrant maximum plus the Doubles with Paul put Gothic on road to victory in a very tight 6-4 win. John Paul took a brace including a fine win in four games over Paul Durrant. Rick Edwards making his season debut in Premier A did not disgrace himself just losing 11-8 in the fifth to both Howard Lupton and Paul Warner.

James Skilleter stood in for the absent Rhys Moore, and was in commanding form taking all 3 singles without dropping a leg. Jason Peck also completed an unexpected maximum. Alan Hough and Peter holland both beat the unlucky Aaron Hacon, who took both to deuce in the fifth sets.

It all went wrong for visiting Firstline Factors when skipper Alan Walpole pulled his back during the knock-up in his first game with Mel Humphries and had to concede his other two games. With the floor being unusually slippery towards the end of the evening Peter Wright did not feel able to continue and conceded the remainder of his game with Mel. A disappointing night for all when matches between the two sides are normally very close and competitive.

Once again Mick Andrews was required to win the last game of the night to claim a maximum and a share of the points against a very strong Remploy side. For Gothic Bob Stevenson's win over Doug Ratcliffe aaaaaand Nev Waters over Bob Purton wre also highlights. Nev playing in one of his last games before moving away. A really good night played in a great spirit and enjoyed by all.

Gerry Rudley showed 'no power' Henderson how to kill the ball with a comprehensive 3-0 win.The longest and most hard fought match was Robin Thaxter 18-16 loss in the fifth to Henderson both players having 6 match points each with David just edging out Robin.
