Norwich Senior Closed Championships 2010

An encouraging number of 33 players took part in the tournament at Catton Grove Primary School, where the absence of last year’s triple winner, Philip Logsdon gave ample opportunity for new champions. The mens singles final was an excellent display of modern table tennis between two young players from the Wensum Club, Owe Karlsson and Ryan Collins.  To reach the final, Collins had beaten Aaron Marche and Andrew Hawes and Karlsson beat Paul Barrett and the un-seeded Tony Zeqiri who did very well to reach the semi finals.  In the first two sets of the final, Karlsson’s serves and strong attacking forehand got the better of his opponent, but in the third set Collins produced more challenging serves and made fewer unforced errors to go 4-1up.  The attacking forehand rallies went his way and the game finished 11-3.  However, despite a strong start in the 4th game, Collins faltered as Karlsson produced some unreturnable serves.  A lucky edge ball put Karlsson 9-5 up and despite Collins producing 2 excellent winners to narrow the deficit, Karlsson won the game 11-8 to take his first singles title. There was a very low entry in the ladies singles and an understandably one-sided final between Wensum’s Premier A player Lauren Spink and veteran Mary Sawyer. In the open doubles semi-finals, Ben Thompson and Mats Olsson beat Mark Dare and Lauren Spink while Sean Molloy and Steve Sadd beat Owe Karlsson and Aaron Marche.  In the final, CEYMS players Thompson/Olsson overpowered the Wensum duo of Molloy/Sadd to take the open doubles title. Mats Olsson also won the Veteran’s over 40 singles having beaten Sean Molloy in the semi final.  Runner-up Frank Hayward had excellent wins over Daid Henderson and Steve Sadd on his way to the final.  However, Sadd got his revenge and beat Hayward in the semi final of the Veteran’s over 50 singles to win the final against Paul Durrant. Unusually, the handicap singles was won by a Premier A player, Ben Thompson (-8) who beat John Miller (+12) in three close sets.   The fast attacking play of young Shane Underhill earned him the Mens Consolation title.  He narrowly beat the experienced veteran David Henderson, having disposed of Paul Durrant and Jason Evans along the way. ResultsMens Singles – Owe Karlsson beat Ryan Collins 7, 6, -3, 8Ladies Singles – Lauren Spink beat Mary Sawyer 3, 3, 3Open Doubles – Ben Thompson and Mats Olsson beat Sean Molloy and Steve Sadd  1, -5, 9, 9Veterans Over 40 Singles – Mats Olsson beat Frank Hayward 11, -8, 6, 8Veterans Over 50 Singles – Steve Sadd beat Paul Durrant 4, 7, 7Handicap Singles – Ben Thompson (-8) beat John Miller (+12) 11, 8, 10Mens Consolation – Shane Underhill beat David Henderson 8, 7, -10, -3, 8 Wendy Durrant

Norwich Junior Closed Championships

Almost double last year’s number of entrants competed in the Norwich Junior Closed at Catton Grove Primary School. In the boys’ singles, last year’s winner and No. 1 seed Tony Zeqiri was the firm favourite, playing in his last year as a junior.  After the group stage, he beat Joshua Baxter, and Will Lawes comfortably to reach the final against Arron Kemp.  Yarmouth – based Arron beat Stephen Harsley in the ¼ final, followed by an unexpected win over county junior Sam Rock in the semi final, having been 2 sets down.  In the final, nerves got the better of Arron in the first game and despite some good attacking rallies, Tony always had the upper hand.  Arron played much better in the next two games, despite a few serves in the net, with some very good shots just missing the end of the table due to Tony’s pace.  Tony, who is already a well-established Premier A league player, finally ran out the confident winner 11-1, 11-6, 11-8.The five entrants in the girls’ singles played a round robin event.  Ex-tennis player Holly Fleming brushed aside all opposition, winning her 4 games without dropping a set.  Kate Brocklesby was the runner up.In the Cadet singles, Tom Fox got off to a storming start, going 2-0 up against Chris Cockburn.  The next two games went Chris’ way but Tom powered through to win the fifth game 11-5.The Under 13 singles was played as a round robin and Tom Fox won the title without dropping a set, his nearest rival and runner up being Daniel SadlerWith an encouraging level of entry in the Under 11 singles, Oliver Thompson reigned supreme as he breezed to victory over Jordan Carr 11-1, 11-5, 11-5 without dropping a set along the way.In the handicap singles, although hampered with a -5 handicap (the next best player having +7), Tony Zeqiri powered his way to the final, despite some very close games along the way, against Chris Cockburn, Kate Brocklesby and Holly Fleming.  Alexander Oliver (+8) was his opponent in the final having beaten Darren Hubbard, Sam Rock and Liam Pye in the rounds.  Alex lost the first game 11-7 but made a great comeback to win the next two sets 11-7, 12-10 having produced some excellent smashes in answer to Tony’s ‘lobbing’ tactics, although a couple of lucky ‘edge’ balls did help.  In the 4th game Alex found himself 10-6 up, and with four match points, having produced some excellent backhand blocks and drives in answer to Tony’s fast attacking style.  Unfortunately for Alex the lead slipped away and Tony sealed the game with a fast backhand loop and some unreturnable serves. His confidence restored, Tony ran out the winner 11-5 in the fifth game.Four county juniors competed in the doubles final.  Tony Zeqiri and Alexander Oliver enjoyed an untroubled route to the final, whereas Sam Rock and Will Lawes were made to work very hard in the semi final, only just beating Arron Kemp and Darren Hubbard 11-9 in the fifth.  In the first game, the pairs seemed quite evenly matched with some interesting ‘back from the table’ rallies, but a few unforced errors gave Sam and Will the game.  The second game was much closer, but some excellent serving from Will ensured a 13-11 win.  The game slipped away from Tony and Alex in the third set to give Will and Sam the doubles title and depriving Tony of a clean sweep in the tournament. Many thanks to Dennis and Margaret Calver for co-ordinating the entries and organising the tournament on the day.  Also, grateful thanks to Wensum Table Tennis Club for the excellent playing facilities, setting up and dismantling the equipment and to Lindsey Dare and her helpers for refreshments throughout the day.Wendy DurrantResultsBoys singles (Under 18) – Tony Zeqiri beat Arron Kemp 1, 6, 8 Girls singles (Round Robin) – Winner Holly Fleming, runner up Kate BrocklesbyCadet singles (Under 15) – Tom Fox beat Chris Cockburn 8, 7, -8, -9, 5Under 13 singles (Round Robin) – Winner Tom Fox, runner-up Daniel SadlerUnder 11 singles – Oliver Thompson beat Jordan Carr 1, 5, 5Handicap singles – Tony Zeqiri (-5) beat Alexander Oliver (8) 7, -7, -10, 10, 5Doubles – Sam Rock and Will Lawes beat Tony Zeqiri and Alexander Oliver 6, 11, 8

Press report

In the Grant Matthewson Norwich & District Table Tennis League, Wensum A continue on their march to the Premier A title with three impressive wins. Gothic C were without Alan Hough, and were grateful to get a draw as Andy Watson, for Missionaries, earned a good maximum, even though two of his wins were close 11-9's in the fifth.  Telephones and Wensum D enjoyed some good competition resulting in a draw. Dom Clark won all three singles for Telephones, and Stuart Henning beat Wensum's Lindsey Dare and Dani Dalmay. Colin Smith won 2 for Wensum, and partnered Lindsey to take the doubles.  With Wensum D well ahead in top spot, it is still tight for runner up position between Gothic and Returners.  Fairfield A are the only certainties for relegation so far. In Division 2 Foxwood D thrashed a weakened Wensum E 10-0 to consolidate their title quest.  Gothic D gained a surprise 7-3 victory over Telephones C thanks to a John Roper maximum.  Daniel Atkins’ maximum eased Wensum E to a narrow 6-4 victory over luckless Newton Flotman A. In Division 3 Easton maintained their top position with a hard fought  6-4 win over Dynamic Rams. Steve Gurton earned an excellent maximum for the Rams and this was complemented by David Porter's maximum for Easton, which included the winning game. The battle for the wooden spoon position at the bottom of the division was won emphatically by Tankards beating The Gamblers 8-2. The return of Roger Hewitt for Tankards ensured the points, leaving The Gamblers ensconced in bottom position.
