Press Report for Evening News 26.3.08

The final week of scheduled matches this season has taken place in the Grant Matthewson Norwich & District Table Tennis League.  In Premier A Foxwood A's march to the title continued with a comprehensive 10-0 win over Gothic A Chris Durrant played well for Gothic A making all the Foxwood players work hard for their victory. Frank Hayward covered himself in glory with his first maximum of the season to ensure Sands A defeated CEYMS C 7-3, he was ably supported by Sean Molly and Ian Brown. Highlight for CEYMS C was Stuart Langridge's 3-0 win over Sands top player Sean Molloy.

Taverham B edged closer to the Premier B title with a 7-3 win at Gothic C with Andy Parker in maximum form for the champions elect. Gothic C, playing their final game of the campaign, secured a point to take them off the foot of the table above Firstline Factors who were also suffering a home defeat, this time at the hands of Sands A who took all four points with an emphatic 9-1 victory. Neville Beckett and Phil Clarke were impressive for Sands while Alan Walpole saved the whitewash for the hosts.

In Division 1 birthday girl Mary Sawyer can count herself very unlucky not to get a maximum. Having won two singles she lost 9-11 in the fifth to Stewart Lines, probably the best player in the division, as Taverham ran out 7-3 winners over Missionaries. Telephones edged it 6-4 over Briston E aided by a Mark Ring maximum and 6 games going the full 5 sets.  Norwich Union secured the top spot in Division 1 with a fine victory 7-3 over Briston E with Mark Trett turning in another maximum and Lindsay Horstead winning 2 for Briston.

U N Hospitals B continued their unbeaten season in Division 2, winning 7-3 against Fairfield Scorpions A for whom Eric Thornton took both his singles to gain a point.  Taverham D overcame close rivals Telephones C 6-4 in their quest for 3rd spot.  CEYMS E condemned Ex-Choristers B to a winless season but gained numerous accolades for sociability and humour.  Remploy A edged out Millermen 6-4 to cement 6th spot.

In Division 3, Foxwood 'D', Telephones 'D' and Rosebery Road MYC all moved ahead of the rest with good wins at the expense of Remploy'B' 8-2, Club 75 8-2, and Dynamic Rams 7-3 respectively. Foxwood 'D' seem likely champions with two games in hand as long as they maintain their excellent push for promotion. UEA 'B' have now finished all their games and are set for their exam period.  Easton 'B' took themselves out of the relegation zone with an excellent 8-2 win away to Thorpe St Andrew. Alan Barker and Barry Chamberlin provided the maximums to take the much needed 4 points.  Newton Flotman 'A' scored a middle of the table draw with Dynamic Rams thanks to a maximum from Roger Canwell.

In Division 4 Taverham E proved far too strong as they beat UEA D 10-0 with only 3 games going past 3 legs. The all UEA tussle between the D and C teams ended in victory for the D team 7-3, Paul Brocklehurst and Robert Hill gaining maximums for the D team.. Newton Flotman B's John Williams won 2 as they lost 3-7 to the Long Stratton youngsters.  The first doubles was a marathon 5 setter with Long Stratton winning 16-14 in the fifth and they won the second doubles to go 5-1 up and never looked back. Tankards brought an end to Shelly Telly's recent run of form with a comprehensive 9-1 victory with Colin Jenkinson losing only his second match of the season to Bob Taylor, who with Phil Heazle gained maximums for Tankards. Taverham E were without their No. 1 as they lost 4-6 to Wensum C in a very close but enjoyable match.  Simon Halliday played well for Wensum to gain a maximum.

Please note that all outstanding league matches must be played by 18th April.  The final press report and league tables will be published before the Presentation Night on 2nd May.
