Foxwood A drew with CEYMS A 5-5.
An epic battle took place at Foxwood with two title contenders slugging it out. Six of the games going all the way. The match finishing in an honourable draw. Matts Olsson maximum helped CEYMS to their hard earned draw. Russell was unlucky to lose two games deuce in the fifth to Steve Sadd & Andy Hawes.Jon Cockburn can also consider himself unlucky losing 11-8 in the fifth to Mats and 11-9 in the fifth to Owe Karlssen.

A very closely contested match, with both 5 leg ties going CEYMS way. Both Lupton & Warner could consider themselves unlucky against Hunt in the 5 leg games, especially Warner who aggravated a back injury. Pendle is struggling to produce his best form in the early stages of the season, but Landridge is proving as awkward as ever to opponents.

Richard Yates got a very good maximum with his first ever win over John Creasey.Gavin Clarke also achieved a maximum partnering Richard in the doubles this in his first match of the season! John Creasey and Vicki Reynolds stopped a whitewash with wins over Vernon Everitt and Colin Edwards respectively. A good four pointer for the home side.

 Norfolk Juniors competed in Division 2C of the County Championships at Harlow last weekend.  With Chris Durrant injured and Rhodri Oliver unavailable, Aaron Marche, Shane Underhill and Tony Zeqiri from the Wensum Club in Norwich had their first opportunity to represent the county, along with Molly Ajeto, also of Wensum, and Claire Wiggs from Kings Lynn.  The team lost 3-7 in their first match against Oxfordshire, but rallied to draw 5-5 with Northamptonshire.  There followed a 9-1 defeat by Essex 3, who were unbeaten on the day, and Norfolk finished with a resounding defeat of Cambridgeshire 8-2.  The team are placed 4th in the table of 7 counties, with 2 further matches to play in the new year. There were good performances from everyone in the team, considering that this was the first experience of representative play for most of the team.  Molly Ajeto was certainly the player of the day with 7 wins out of 8 games played.

In Premier A of the Grant Matthewson Norwich & District Table Tennis League, Foxwood A stormed to the top of the Premier A, with a very impressive team performance to defeat former champions Park Lane 8-2. Highlight of the match for Foxwood A was a Steve Sadd maximium which included the scalp of Philip Logsdon who gained the only two games for Park Lane with wins over Jon Cockburn & Andrew Hawes.  The Foxwood B team also caused a surprise against the unbeaten Sands A with a 7- 3 win. Mark Wortley playing his first game of the season showing his class with two wins, particularly against the very dependable Mick Brougton which proved the turning point for Foxwood B. He was ably supported by Kevin Roper & Paul Speakman who both won 2 singles each. UEA A started their season in Division 1 with a narrow 6-4 victory over Taverham C, Nick Pullen starting with a maximum. Taverham C also lost 6-4  to Telephones B despite 3 wins for Stewart Lines just winning a close fought 5 setter with Mark Ring to claim his maximum. CEYMS D had a good 7-3 win over Marsh with both Andy Bonham and Andy Tuddenham winning all 3. Ex-Choristers A lost narrowly to Electricity 4-6, Dave Fordham of Electricity losing his first match of the season but Peter Dormer claiming a maximum to restore the balance. Paul Elsegood was Ex-Chorister’s top scorer with two wins and helping Andy Cullum to win the doubles. In Division 2, a first maximum for Norfolk junior Aaron Marche gained Wensum A a valuable draw against high flying CEYMS E who remain unbeaten thanks to Alwyn Bates’ second double in succession.  With Barry Blanch and Doug Ratcliffe unbeaten, Remploy A gained their first victory of the season over Ex-Choristers B whose Steve Smith suffered an injury.  In their first match for approximately a decade, a reformed Holborn side suffered a 1-9 defeat to UNH B.  A good team effort, including both doubles secured a narrow 6-4 victory for Fairfield Scorpions A over Millermen.  A convincing win by Telephones C saw them continue their winning sequence to top the table. In Division 3 Telephones 'D' and Rosebery Road MYC head the table closely followed by Briston 'F' in third spot after a good win 6-4 over Dynamic Rams, thanks to a Tom Nudd maximum. UEA got off to a start for the season after their usual delay with a good draw with fourth placed Easton 'B'  Division 4 saw an impressive win for Newton Flotman B, 8-2 winners over Shelly Telly although Michelle Savage played well taking David Hawkes to 5 sets before going down. Maximums for Newton Flotman youngsters 15 year old James Ridgeon and 14 year old David Hawkes. Taverham E beat Long Stratton with two maximums in the Taverham side for Reg Juett (aged 81) and Howard Jones and one for Long Stratton through Ashley Crowe. Norwich Union D had another impressive win 8-2 victory over Tankards. Three maximums for Norwich Union through John Williams, John Robertson Jnr and Stephen Ogle. The newly formed Wensum D picked up their first draw against UEA D. Andrew Latham and Daniel Atkins from Wensum were very impressive in their two wins a piece. Paul Brocklehurst picked up a maximum for UEA D. In the YMCA v Shelly Telly match YMCA managed a 6-4 despite only having three players. Diana Cunninghams game play has got much sharper under the expert coaching of Martin Stevenson but it was Michelle Savage's win over Bob Bootyman (a thrilling 5 setter) that secured the team their first point.

Sands B drew with Panthers 5-5.
Peter Mathieson put Panthers 1-0 up beating Phil Clarke and Neville Beckett levelled by beating David Sprunt. Panthers went into a 5-1 lead for Sands to fight back and claim a draw. Peter Read winning his second game in 13 years against David. Phil Clarke recovering from 0-2 in games and 4-8 down to Kim Downes to take it in five sets. A good recovery from Sands.

Sands A lost to Park Lane A 2-8.
With Sands A taking a 2-1 lead with fine wins by Sean Molly over David Henderson and a comprehensive win by Frank Hayward over Steven Howlett, the writing looked on the wall for Park Lane. Despite this setback P.L.fought back really well to take the next 7 games to win 8-2.Logsdon & Howlett were made to fight all the way in the Doubles by Molloy & Broughton scraping home in the 5th game.

Norwich Union A lost to United Norwich Hospitals A 3-7.
Adrian Turner played well for Hospitals to earn a well deserved treble. Lawrence Caley showed his attacking game in taking Darren Barnard's unbeaten record. Bob King gets off the mark with a win over Roger Pymer. Union continue to struggle for points while Hospitals enjoy some success at the other end of the table.

Hellesdon beat Norwich Union A 7-3.
Another excellent maximum from Mel Humphries with good support from Francis Webb saw Hellesdon home in a hard fought match against old rivals Union A. Roger Crossfield let good leads slip against Lawrence Caley but made amends by coming from behind to edge out Bob King. A sporting match.

In the Grant Matthewson Norwich & District Table Tennis League, Taverham A, gunning for the Premier A title started their title challenge with 3 impressive wins over CEYMS A & C teams plus Foxwood A. New signing Gary Tendler was in impressive form winning all his games against CEYMS A & Foxwood A. CEYMS C gave them a real fright however just losing 6-4 with Keith Hunt taking a brace against Mark Dare & Kelly Skeggs. Lauren Spinks 3 wins plus winning the doubles proved decisive. Chris Durrant showed early season form for Gothic A to take a maximum plus taking the doubles with dad Paul against CEYMS C to ensure an 8-2 win.

 Premier B action saw Peter Mathieson of Panthers in maximum mood but he could not prevent defeat against unbeaten Taverham B.  Foxwood C had Andy Leeds in top form as his maximum helped secure a draw against Sands B.

In Division 1 there were wins for Taverham C, 6-4 victors over CEYMS D with a maximum for Stewart Lines, Telephones B who beat Briston D 6-4 with a maximum by Mark Ring, Briston E 6-4 over Electricity for whom Dave Fordham again won a maximum, Easton A winners 7-3 over Marsh with Adrian Smith hitting his way to a maximum.  A first of the season victory for Marsh over Electricity 7-3, Dave Fordham once again with a maximum but Nigel Metcalf, Mark Annetts and Paul Brown all winning two for Marsh, and CEYMS D, without Andy Bonham, had a 7-3 victory over Easton A with Andy Tuddenham chipping in with a maximum.  

In Division 2 Telephones C chalked up their third 7-3 win to top the table.  Gothic D gained their first victory with a hard-fought win over Millermen.  CEYMS E maintained their unbeaten run, beating Fairfield Scorpions A 7-3 aided by a battling maximum from ‘edges' Johnson.  Remploy A suffered their third 7-3 defeat at the hands of UNH B who have risen to 3rd in the table.

Last year's Division 4 champions Norwich Union C continued their good form with a 7-3 victory over Fairfield Scorpions B thanks to a Steve Thorn maximum.  A brace each from Roger Canwell and (Lord Mayor) Roy Blower sealed an 8-2 victory for Newton Flotman A over Easton B.

Foxwood had Andy Leeds to thank for his maximum which prevented Sands from getting their first win. Some very close games with Sands 4-1 down to lead 5-4 with the doubles to play, but Andy Leeds was the difference with some fine forehand loops.

Taverham C lost to Telephones B 4-6.
IT was neck and neck, they won one, we won one, 3-3 then Taverham lost the nest two, Geoff not quite getting in gear against Graham King and Jeremy Cocks illustrated the disproportionate effect of nets and edges when the match is up to 11 only. So, Taverham 3-5 down, and the top two on the table. My goodness what a contest, going all the way to the fifth game and an 7-7 Mark served, then 8-8, Stewart 10-8 up and won the next, so 4-5 down. And the doubles - well Telephones deserved this. P.S. JV needs to be fitter!

UEA A beat Taverham C 6-4.
In their first match of the season a multicultural UEA side took on newly promoted Taverham C and just scraped a win. At 4-4 it came down to a battle of the number 1s, with UEA's Nick Pullen having more of the luck to beat John Vaaughan. Then there was a 5 set doubles which was narrowly won by UEA to get them up and running for the season. An enjoyable evening.

A very hard fought match. Taverham were 4-2 up and just managed to win the last two games to win 6-4. 81 year old Reg gaining a maximum. Ashley gaining a maximum for Long Stratton.

Park Lane sufferred their largest defeat in at least 10 years to a fired up Foxwood A. Steve Sadd in superb form winning his 3 games including the notable scalp of Phil Logsdon. An excellent team performance from Foxwood deservedly took all four points. Henderson & Howlett showing their age with Howlett getting injured and Hendo complaining of lack of practice.Logsdon despite a groin strain still showed his class, grit and determination to take the only 2 games for Park Lane.

Previously unbeaten Sands A came to a crashing defeat against Foxwood B 7-3. A very good team performance from Foxwood. All players winning 2 singles each, with Mark Wortley making his season's debut for Foxwood. Particularly impressive was Paul Speakman win over Sean Molloy 3 games to 0, plus both Wortley & Roper defeating the wily old Veteran Mick Broughton

Jamie Leeder got Scorpions off to a good start in beating Aaron Marche. Maximums by Jamie and Eric swung the result in favour of the away side. Nets and edges also helped Scorpions. The young Wensum team will benefit from stronger opposition having climbed brom Division 5.

A shakey start to the season with lots of nets and edges all evening but all played in a good spirit. See Saw battle with no side going more that 1 rubber ahead. Norman just winning the 4's battle in a close 5 setter & Steve just getting the better of Rob

An excellent start by Foxwood B saw them take a 2-0 lead with excellent wins by Paul S over Steven H and Steve S beating David H. However Park Lane roared back to take the next 8 games to win 8-2. The turning point was Howlett's epic battle with Steve Sadd to eventually win 11-9 in the 5th game.Phil was again in good form not dropping a leg, but Foxwood gave Park Lane a real scare in the doubles only just losing in the 5th set.

The first match for both newly promoted sides. Taverham went 4-2 up, Stewart Lines winning a brace and Cook and Vaughan chipping a singles each. Tea and biscuits at the interval (made by Mrs Vaughan), then the battle resumed, Nanjo and Andy tuddenham winning their remaining singles to make it 4-4. So Lines v Bonham (one each last season) and Stewart came good, and then the old firm of Lines and Vaughan wrapped up the doubles to seal a Taverham vistory - bloody marvellous!

A very close match with Ashley maximum and Molly with two excellent wins.

Match Report - Park Lane A v CEYMS B

Park Lane A beat CEYMS B 8-2.
A very entertaining evening with Hendo lacking early season form, lost to Paul Brown comfortably, Steve Barrett impressed to also defeat Hendo.Steven Howlett & Paul Brown had a very close game just defeating Paul in the fifth set.Hilary played extremly well against Phil and was unlucky not to inflict an early season upset.

Match Report - Gothic A v CEYMS C

Gothic A beat CEYMS C 8-2.
CEYMS unlucky to get nothing out of this tough encounter. Chris Durrant's impressive consistent performance earned him a hat-trick which made all the difference to gaining all the points.

Foxwood B lost to Norfolk County Council A 1-9.
Comprehensive win for Council despite some very close games. Paul Speakman's fine win over Rod Hamilton was the only success for Foxwood B.

Foxwood B lost to Foxwood A 2-8.
In the battle of the Foxwood's, the A side comprehensively defeated the B side 8-2, despite some close games. Good wins for Kevin & Trevor for the B team over Andrew Hawes, both going the distance, proved the only success for the B team

Briston A lost to CEYMS B 4-6.
In a very close and exciting match with every player contributing, Steve Barrett excellent 3 singles wins plus his doubles win with Paul Brown proved decisive to gain a 6-4 win for CEYMS B.

Match Report - CEYMS C v Taverham A

02/10/2007, played at CEYMS.
CEYMS C lost to Taverham A 4-6.
Late night show at CEYMS. Titanic battle between Hunt & Dare finishing 18-16 to Hunt in fifth. Lauren Spink as good as she needed to be. Match 5-4 to Taverham went to final doubles but Spink/Dare saw off Pendle/Langridge for Taverham win.

Rosebery Road MYC beat Remploy B 8-2.
Rosebery Road MYC making a return to Division 3 made short work of the Remploy B team, with Geoff Critten and Carl Cowles putting up any resistance. Heading back to Div.2 boys ?

Fairfield Scorpions B lost to Easton B 4-6.
Good away win for Easton 'B' - who must be in contention for promotion this season providing Eric Longbottom can field the same squad each week? Ivna Hewitt provided the resistance for the Fairfield Scorpions with Ocu and Tom winning a game each.
