Press Report 14/10/09
In the Grant Matthewson Norwich & District Table Tennis League, an exciting start to the Premier A season with three ‘Wensum’ teams in the division, it should make for some very competitive matches this season. Best game of the matches so far was CEYMS A hard fought win over current champions Foxwood B by 6 -4. A real dent in their title aspirations so early in the season. Hero for CEYMS A was Ben Thompson with an excellent maximum including the notable scalps of both Ryan & Jake Collins. Russell King also took a brace for CEYMS to put the champions on the back foot.
Game of the season so far was Philip Logsdon’s excellent win over Owe Karlsson, coming back from 2-1 down to win 11-8 in the fifth to lead Park Lane to an impressive 8-2 win over Wensum B. in a match that could have easily been a defeat for Park Lane.
In Premier B, newly relegated Taverham A got off to a flying start with an 8-2 win over a luckless Nuorder B. Whilst Andy Parker and Wayne Lubbock were recording maximums for Taverham, Andy Broughton could consider himself unlucky to lose 13-15 and 11-13 in the fifth set. Sands B also scored maximum points as they trounced Taverham B by the same score. Phil Clarke played well for Sands whilst Sandeep Nene won on his debut for Taverham. Nuorder A had a close encounter with Telephones A, winning 6-4, with Lawrence Caley winning three for the home side whilst Mark Ring kept Telephones in the match. Francis Webb inspired Hellesdon to a 6-4 win at Firstline Factors, fighting back from 3-4 to win the final three games in a sporting and competitive encounter. The teenagers of Wensum C defeated an experienced Panthers to record their first victory since being promoted from Division 1. William Lawes was unbeaten for Wensum with Sam Rock and Darren Hubbard each winning a brace. Neville Beckett of Sands played well for a maximum as they drew with Nuorder B for whom Andy Broughton lost another marathon match, this time against Peter Read, losing 15-17 in the decider. Hellesdon kept the winning habit, this time a superb team effort to beat old rivals Taverham A and had Mel Humphries in fine form. In Division 1, Wensum D are leading, heavily defeating both Missionaries and Electricity 8-2, reaping maximum points so far. Peter Dormer of Electricity is out for a while owing to an early injury. We wish him a speedy recovery, and maybe look forward to seeing Jamie MacIntosh as reserve. Look out for Wensum’s as yet unbeaten Dale Ajeto, who is rather strong for this division but also Lindsay Horstead (Briston D) and Eric Thornton(Fairfield A), having won five out of six singles to date. In Division 2, resounding starts for Foxwood D and SFC, both 9-1 victors over a much changed NCC side and newly promoted Newton Flotman A respectively. Youngsters of Wensum E gained maximum points over experienced Telephones C whilst Remploy A produced a fine team effort to gain a draw against Rosebery Road MYC. In week two, Long Zhang and James Wilson to the fore in UEA B’s7-3 victory over RRMYC. Foxwood D were firing on all cylinders with another maximum pointer, with Miller men unable to convert any of 5 five-setters into victories. Choppers got off to a fine start with Mark Annett and Bill Watts guiding them to a 8-2 success and condemning NCC to a second ‘pointless’ match. Maximums from Bob Weston and Norman Laws gained a 7-3 victory for Telephones C over Remploy A. A Kieran Brady maximum and another singles victory for Pat West not sufficient to save Newton Flotman A from defeat to Wensum E 6-4 for whom Aaron Kemp took both singles and Mark Grubb gained his first league win. In Division 3, UEA 'C' met with two defeats, losing to Thorpe St Andrew and Taverham 'D' 8-2 both games. YMCA got off to a good start with a 7-3 defeat of stalwarts Club 75, thanks to a maximum from Roland Marton defeating John Creasey on the way.
In Division 4, Shelly Telly started with an impressive 7-3 victory over newcomers Wensum H with Colin Jenkinson and Jeanette Baxter especially proving far too strong. For Wensum Howard Wurr and Mark Weston and Alex Richardson were making league debuts. Fairfield B recorded an 8-2 win over Newton Flotman B, with Russell Parker and Nick Harris leading the way with maximums. Wensum G and Foxwood E fought out a 5-5 draw a fair result. Sol Gos for Wensum and young Sam Thompson from Foxwood E impressive. Shelly Telly lost narrowly to Taverham E with Jeanette Baxter coming back from 2-0 down only to lose 10-12 in the 5th to Rod Edwards. She was avenged by Colin Jenkinson who beat Edwards in 4 and so got his maximum as did octogenarian Reg Juett. George Luong, who has returned after a 30 year break showed touches of the skill he learned from his father - one time Vietnamese number 1. Wensum G had an impressive 9-1 win against UEA E giving them maximum points. Pat and Sol Goss and Chris Cockburn all won maximums, Steve Cockburn lost in 5 to Jitender Cheema who was the only winner for the UEA E side.
