Another desperately disappointing Nuorder showing with confidence low at the top order. Kim Downes the player of the match for Panthers as his maximum included 2 five set wins against Ian Taylor and Lawrence Caley. Bob King secured a point for the home side following a net and edge victory against David Sprunt and an excellent and comprehensive win against Peter Mathieson.

Hellesdon YCOB beat Unisands B 7-3.
With Peter Read not able to play having to deal with a family emergency it was left to Neville Beckett and Phil Clarke to fly the flag for Sands. They took full advantage of an 'out of sorts' Mel Humphries and clawed back the deficit to 3-4 at one stage.Howecver, Hellesdon recovered from this, mainly to a brace of wins from John Howlett and a hard fought four set win from Francis Webb over Phil Clarke. Hellesdon took the doubles to make the score 7-3, but it could have been so different....

Fairfield B beat Shelly Telly comfortably although the 3 - 7 loss was made more bearable to Ms Shelly Telly herself (Michelle Savage) with a confident victory over Andy Roberts. Nick, Ed, Tim and Andy were pleasent company and good sports and Shelly Telly are already looking forward to the return match at the Miller Hall in March when Diana and Wendy resolve to win not jusrt games but ties!!

A very competitive entertaining match with the first 3 matches taking 1.5 hours to complete. The 8-2 scoreline was S.F.C's 6th win out of 6 although U.E.A. deserved more out of it as they are a very strong side. With Joe Taplin displaying a distinct lack of fitness - it was uphill all the way for Gothic. Paul Pegg played well to win all his singles but this was counterbalanced by an inept display from Dave Marrison. Taking nothing away from Phones who took full advantage and deserved their win.

In Premier A of the Grant Matthewson (Chartered Certified Accountants) Norwich & District Table Tennis League, Gothic A, after a good start to the season and  currently in third place, had mixed fortunes this week losing a close fought match by 8 -2 against CEYMS A , Ben Thompson starred for CEYMS with a maximum, highlight of the night for Gothic was Paul Durrant's five set win over the talented Russell King. In another tight match they came out victors 8-2 over Briston A, both Paul & Chris Durrant with maximums although Chris can consider himself fortunate as he saved 4 match points against Gerry Rudley eventually winning in the fifth set. Similarly, Paul Durrant just got home against Gerry 11-9 in the fifth set.  Wensum B2 had an honourable draw against CEYMS B for whom Paul Brown took his three singles including the notable scalp of Sean Molloy. Ian Brown & Sean Molloy both scored two wins each plus the doubles for a share of the points. In their other match without Sean Molloy, Wensum found the going tough losing 9-1 to current league leaders Park Lane. Philip Logsdon continued his unbeaten run with another maximum, 'no power' David Henderson lost in an entertaining game to Wensum veteran Ian Brown.    Top game in Premier B saw promotion hopefuls Wensum C and Foxwood C go head to head with Wensum finding top form with an emphatic 9-1 home win with Jason Evans and Bob Webster in superb form. Wensum junior William Lawes lost his 100% record to the Foxwood skipper Carl Matthewson for their solitary win. Foxwood maintain top position with an 8-2 mauling of Nuorder A whose Ian Taylor won a brace of singles to save the whitewash. Taverham A took maximum points from Sands in an 8-2 win when Andy Parker and Andy Calver scored maximums for Taverham. Neville Beckett took a lone singles for Sands when beating Wayne Lubbock. Panthers were indebted to skipper Peter Mathieson when sharing the points with Nuorder B for whom John Williams played well.  Lots of drawn matches indicate the close and competitive nature of Division 1.  Gothic C were relieved to get the draw against a very steady Telephones B opposition to stay at the top of the table.  Andy Bonham had a good night for CEYMS D against Missionaries, winning all three in straight sets. Andy Tuddenham unlucky not to pick up a singles win as CEYMS took the doubles in the fifth to gain the draw.  The Returners drew with Ex-Choristers A 5-5, in an enjoyable evening with 5 games going to the deciding leg.  Returners fought back from 4-1 down to force the draw, with a tight doubles win. Rhys Moore secured a maximum and remains unbeaten (when he turns up!) Andy Cullum and Paul Arthurs picked up 2 each for Ex-choristers. It is suggested that visitors to the Rockland venue take a torch as it is the darkest place in the world from car park to Hall!  CEYMS D were well beaten by an Electricity side strengthened by the inclusion of Jamie MacIntosh, a class apart at this level. For CEYMS, Andy Bonham saved the whitewash with an 11-9 in the fifth win over Mike Cable.  Missionaries battled from 4-0 down to level at 4-4 with Fairfield A with the final drawn score a fair result.  An excellent win for Fairfield’s Janet Kelly over Mary Sawyer and a good maximum for Richard Westgate of Missionaries.  Ex Choristers gained maximum points against Electricity, with only Paul Elsegood losing, in the fifth to Keith Meader.  In another drawn match, between Telephones B and Briston D, Stuart Henning lost all 3 in his first match this season. Bob ‘the hero’ Smith won all three for Telephones, and helped to win the doubles with Paul Broome. Foxwood D are still on top of Division 2 although held to a draw by Telephones C.  SFC are still unbeaten following an 8-2 victory over UEA B.  Remploy A surprised Wensum E for their first victory of the season, 7-3, thanks to Bob Purton and George Sangarde maximums.  Millermen’s Terry Osborne finally off the mark with an outstanding maximum aided by Peter Ward for 3 welcome points against NCC with a 7-3 victory.


The Gamblers are finally off the bottom of Division 3 with points gained from a draw with Remploy 'B' where Matt Green took the scalp of experienced Geoff Critten to earn the share of the points , plus a point at home to Thorpe St Andrew. YMCA forge further on with a 9-1 defeat of bottom club Tankards, where Dave Oxbury's win over Darren Phillips saved the whitewash. Ex Choristers 'B' took advantage over a weakened Taverham 'C' side to win 9-1. Trevor Johnson pulled one out of the bag to stop the whitewash with a win over Paul Rumsey. Ex Choristers ' B' look  good for a top three placing on this form. Taverham recovered, albeit with a weakened team again, to beat The Gamblers 9-1. NuOrder 'C' fought out a hard earned draw with Dynamic Rams thanks to maximums from the home team's Lakshmann Krishnappan and Steve Gurton for the Rams.

Wensum played some great table tennis to gain maximum points against high flying Foxwood C. Maximums from Bob Webster and Jase Evans ensuring a comfortable win. Will Lawes suffered his first defeat of the season, losing to evergreen Carl Matthewson. Good luck to the sporting foxwood side in their battle for promotion.

Jon Hancock and Chris Durrant had an excellent match only for Jon to lose in four games losing the last 3 games all at deuce.

In the Grant Matthewson (Chartered Certified Accountants) Norwich & District Table Tennis League, Park Lane move to the top of Premier A with a 9-1 win over CEYMS C, Philip Logsdon & Steven Howlett with maximums. The only consolation for CEYMS C was Steve Pendle’s five set victory over David Henderson coming back from 2-0 down. CEYMS B consolidated a mid table position over Hospitals A with a 6 -4 win, a maximum for Paul Barrett and a brace for Paul Brown plus the doubles for CEYMS B ensured the points. Hospitals also suffered an 8-2 defeat to Wensum B with Owe Karlsson showing his class for Wensum B with a comfortable maximum, Martin Freeland had the only two wins for Hospitals upon making his debut. Wensum A thrashed Briston A 10-0 with debuts for Ryan Collins and John Monk.

Match of the week in Premier B saw Taverham A entertain their B side and edged home 6-4 with a brace of wins from all the A side. Martyn Cook kept the relegation threatened B side in the match with two fine wins over Andrew Parker and Andy Calver. Whilst Hellesdon and Gothic B were sharing the points with Alan Hough turning on the style for Gothic, Hellesdon had to rely on Francis Webb to keep them in the game. Sands thrashed Firstline Factors 8-2 with Peter Read doing the damage for Sands whilst Harold Chapman played well for Factors. Foxwood C take over top spot for the time being after a 9-1 mauling of the luckless Nuorder B for whom John Williams saved the whitewash with a three set victory over Mark Wilson. In Division 2 another 4 points for Foxwood D who crushed UEA B to take top spot.  Wensum E’s youngsters overcame experienced RRMYC to continue their fine start.Dynamic Rams jump back to top spot in Division 3 with a close win over Club 75. The doubles wins proved the decider for the Rams.  Newcomers 'The Gamblers' put up a spirited fight against Club 75 but lost 9-1. Matt Green for The Gamblers ' achieved an excellent victory over the experienced David Smith and the team were unlucky not to come away with a point at least.  A depleted Taverham 'D' side scraped a draw against a 3 man Wensum 'F' side where Stephen Harsley shone after playing one of the best games of the night against Taverham youngster Tom Baldock-Yaxley. Paul Edwards narrowly beat Howard Jones in the fifth game to give the Wensum lads a well earned draw.
 
In a keenly contested Division 4 match, Wensum H and Foxwood E shared the spoils in a 5-5 draw. James Bootyman top scored for the Wensum team winning both his singles and a doubles with Finn Brocklesby, Ian Howes put in another solid performance to win both singles.ard Howard Wurr was unlucky to lose both his matches in 5 and Daniel Marche played well to take a game off Zane Axten. Sam Thompson scored a singles maximum for the Foxwood team with Zane Axten and Len Layt winning one each. Fairfield B’s 7-3 win over Wensum G was actually much closer than the score suggests with only one match won in straight sets.  Nick Harris won a singles maximum for Fairfield. Steve Cockburn, Pat and Sol Goss each won one for Wensum but Chris Cockburn was very unlucky not to convert some hard fought play into a win. UEA D and Taverham E battled out a 5-5 draw. Matt Skeoch and Tom Melvin sparkled on fireworks night for UEA winning two singles each and Wilson Yung one. George Leoung, Reg Juett and Nash Panday each won a singles for Taverham and took both doubles. Taverham E proved too strong for an understrength Wensum H 10-0 and despite recent improvement, Shelly Telly went down 2-8 to Newton Flotman B comprising 3 generations of Williams plus Ruth Bullard. Colin Jenkinson won one singles and combined with Diana Cunningham to win the doubles for Shelly.
Congratulations to Foxwood E, voted ‘Grant Matthewson Team of the Month for October’ for their combination of youth and experience that is proving to be tough opposition for teams in Division 4. Captained by the experience of Ray Chipperfield, and his playing partner of many years, Lennie Layt, are guiding the two youngsters Sam Thompson and Zane Axten into league play and seem to be taking to it like ducks to water. Ably supported by Brian Beck, the team remains unbeaten with 2 wins and 2 draws collecting 11 points to date and lying in 4th place in the table.

Sands took all 4 points mainly due to Peter Read unbeaten on the night.Classic hitting game between Harold Chapman, who was the pick of the Firstline players, and Peter Read with some exceptional rallies. Terry Copland took Peter Read all the way after winning the opening two games, only for Peter to bounce back and take the match 15-13 in the deciding fifth.

An entertaining and sporting encounter with the honours shared. Alan Hough was drafted in from the C side and played well to beat Francis Webb and Roger Crossfield. Paul Pegg also won a brace of ties, whilst Francis Webb continued his good form for Hellesdon. It was good to see Seamus Chambers back in Norwich league play, having lost none of his wit, whilst playing well to beat the in form Mel Humphries.

A battle at the bottom of the table ended all square with Taverhams Stu Lines in excellent form with a maximum. He was made to fight all the way by Ian Taylor who led 6-2 in the deciding 5th set. Nuorder A not firing on all cylinders as yet and searching for that second win.

DIVISION 1 An enjoyable evening with 5 games going to the deciding leg.Returners fought back from 4-1 down to force the draw, with a tight doubles win. Rhys Moore secured a maximum and remains unbeaten (when he turns up!) Andy Cullum and Paul Arthurs picked up 2 each for Ex-choristers. DIV SEC suggests that visitors to Rockland venue take a torch as it is the darkest place in the world from car park to Hall!

In Premier A of the Grant Matthewson (Chartered Certified Accountants) Norwich & District Table Tennis League, Hospitals A started the season with a close fought win 6-4 over Briston A, Martin Gray took 3 singles and brother Kevin two, plus Martin combined with Darren Barnard to take the doubles. Robin Thaxter scored a brace for Briston. In the battle of CEYMS B & C sides the B side won 7-3 thanks mainly to a maximum from Paul Barrett. Briston A gained a hard fought draw in an explosive match with Wensum B Hancock and Thaxter were the heroes for Briston with a brace each plus the doubles. Owe Karlsson showed his class for Wensum with another maximum. Focus this week in Premier B is on the bottom of the table as Taverham B secured their first points of the season against Firstline Factors with Taverham’s  Stewart Lines in superb form with a singles maximum and teaming up with Martyn Cook to take the doubles to force a draw. Peter Wright and Harold Chapman both produced a brace of wins to keep Firstline Factors in the match. Nuorder A continue to struggle and suffered a fourth straight defeat with a 4-6 defeat against mid table Sands. Neville Becket edged home 18-16 in the fourth against Ian Taylor and with all the Sands players winning two singles each it was left for Nuorder’s Lawrence Caley to gain a solitary point for the visitors. Telephones A picked up a valuable point when visiting Foxwood C with Jeremy Cocks in good form with a brace of wins for the phones. Foxwood keep up the pressure at the top end of the table, whilst Wensum C moved into second place with a close 6-4 win over Hellesdon. Wensum youngster William Lawes played with a maturity beyond his years in winning a fine maximum against experienced opposition to maintain his 100% record.Division 1, Gothic C are hot on the heels of Wensum D, who currently just take the top spot. Maximums for Alan Hough and Wendy Durrant ensured an 8-2 victory over Taverham. CEYMS came back from 1-4 down to earn a 5-5 draw against Fairfield. Special mention for Eric Thornton who played well again to win all his singles for Fairfield. Briston, a little under par, suffered defeat against Ex-Choristers for whom Andy Cullum remains unbeaten. Steve Hudson and Lindsay Horstead picked up a game each for Briston, but it was not enough to salvage a point.  Electricity surprisingly went down 1-9 against Telephones B, with many 4 and 5 set encounters. Only Dave Fordham sparked a win against Bob Smith. Kevin Garner maintained his unbeaten run to push SFC to top spot in Division 2 with a narrow victory over RRMYC.  A Roy Hattan brace helped Remploy A to a draw against high flyers Choppers aided by Nigel Metcalf’s maximum.  Young Wensum E narrowly overcame the experienced Gothic D thanks to Aaron Kemp’s maximum.  Millermen finally gained their first victory with Rob Pennell and Philip Moore securing five games with Trevor Pruce the decider over Newton Flotman A.In Division 3, YMCA march on with two excellent victories over Ex Choristers 'B' and Wensum ‘F’. Roland Marton and Ede Kosa seem to be making their mark in the division helping their side to well earned 6-4 victories. NuOrder 'C' had a great 9-1 win over Tankards then were beaten by the same score by an excellent performance by Ex Choristers 'B'. Easton maintain their push for the top spots with a battling performance against Thorpe St Andrew where winning both doubles games proved the decider. New club Gamblers received another drubbing at the hands of UEA 'C' 10-0 but they are settling in to league play.
There is an exciting opportunity to see some sensational international table tennis this coming Saturday, 14th November 2009, when Alan Cooke and John Hilton come to Wensum Table Tennis club at Catton Grove School, Weston Road, Norwich to help them celebrate their first anniversary at the school. Bob King got Nuorder off to a good start with a win over Nev Beckett, then games went either way. In a very close 4th leg Nev got home 18-16 against Ian Taylor to make the match score 2-2. Lawrence then beat Phil 3-0 to put Nuorde 3-2 up, then Peter beat Bob 3-0 to square it again. Sands then took the next three singles to secure the win and three points, with all the Sands players winning two each. (NB)

Honours shared in this early season battle at the bottom of the table between Taverham C and Firstline Factors. Stewart Lines inclusion for Taverham B was a welcome boost as his maximum was very important as it ensured Taverham gained their first league points. With Alan Walpole not available, the evergreen Terry Copland chipped in with an important win and added to the brace of wins by both Peter Wright & Harold Chapman.

Foxwood C drop a home point in a 7-3 success against Telephones A who had Jeremy Cocks in good form including a win over Adam Smith. Mark Ring also did well to beat Trevor Cockburn whilst home skipper Carl Matthewson returned to form with a brace, including a straight sets win over Mark. Adam Smith also did well to recover from 0-2 in games to edge home 11-9 in the decider over Mark.

Wensum C beat Hellesdon YCOB 6-4.
A William Lawes maximum inspired the youngsters of Wensum to overcome the experienced veterans of Hellesdon, winning 6-4 in a sporting encounter at the school. Mel Humphries brace kept Hellesdon in the hunt at 4-4 but it was left to Sam Rock to win a five setter against a determined Francis Webb in the final tie of the evening to take the win and three points that keep Wensum on track to challenge for a promotion place.

In the Grant Matthewson (Chartered Certified Accountants) Norwich & District Table Tennis League, UEA take a commanding lead at the top of Premier B after two more victories against Nuorder A & B with Sam Collins and Matt Hayes in commanding form for the students. Foxwood C had Trevor Cockburn in excellent form when defeating the previously unbeaten Hellesdon YCOB. Firstline Factors made Gothic B fight all the way for their 6-4 win with a Paul Pegg maximum for Gothic. Taverham B struggled to get on the scoresheet as Panthers took maximum points with Kim Downes and Peter Mathieson hitting form. Match of the week was the titanic battle between mid table Telephones and Nuorder B who fought out a draw at the Miller Hall with all players contributing.
In Division 1Gothic C march onwards and upwards despite a singles maximum from Andy Cullum for the Ex Choristers and a good win for Paul Arthurs over Alan Hough.    At 3-3, Gothic turned the screw, enjoying their 6-4 win after relegation from Premier B last season.  Missionaries had a win at last as they beat Telephones B 6-4 with a brace each for Andy Watson and Mary Sawyer, a great win for Simon Halliday over Dom Clarke 11-8 in the fifth game and a vital doubles win.
 
Foxwood D hold onto top spot in Division 2 after beating Remploy A 8-2, though shocked by Doug Ratcliffe and Barry Blanche taking a 2-0 lead, defeating Wayne Dunthorne and Stuart Cooper respectively.  SFC gained a fourth consecutive victory by 8-2 over bottom placed Gothic D.  Newton Flotman A also had an 8-2 victory over NCC with maximums for Mark Beswick and Kieron Brady. Dynamic Rams take top spot in the Division 3 table with a 10-0 victory over newcomers 'The Gamblers' who we welcome to the Norwich League. The Gamblers’ Matt Green played well to take a game off the very experienced Rams No.1. Steve Gurton.  They are closely followed by Taverham 'D' who narrowly scraped a 6-4 victory against a battling Remploy 'B' side well led by Geoff Critten who excelled on the evening with a fine maximum. Newcomer for Taverham Shane Sivier marked his arrival to the League taking the deciding last game against Derek Needs.
 
In Division 4, 2-man UEA D went down 3-7 to Newton Flotman B. Matt Skeoch won his two singles for UEA and combined with Rob Russell to win the doubles. John and Doug Williams both beat Russell in their singles to gain 3 points and the win for Newton Flotman. Jeanette Baxter and Colin Jenkinson continued their success with maximums as Shelly Telly drew 5-5 with Wensum G. Diana Cunningham and Michelle Savage played well but lost 14-16 in the fourth to the improving Chris Cockburn/Sol Goss, the latter also scoring a singles maximum.  UEA D went down 4-6 to Foxwood E despite a maximum by David Cheung beating Len Layt and Brian Beck. Foxwood’s star player on the night was Zane Axten with two wins in the singles beating James Lee and Alistair Nicholls but the doubles were shared. Roy Blower lost the first two games to Howard Wurr then put in a gutsy performance to win in 5 sets, going on to beat Wensum youngster Alex Richardson to record a maximum.  John and Doug Williams maximums helped Newton Flotman to an 8-2 win. Wensum youngster Daniel Marche was unlucky to come away without a win. Wensum H scored their first win with a 6-4 victory over UEA D. Ian Howes was the match winner for Wensum with a maximum two singles wins. For the visitors Rob Russell was leading scorer with two singles wins. Taverham E’s Rod Edwards, George Leoung, Reg Juett and Nash Panday all proved far too strong for Newton Flotman B, enjoying a comprehensive 10-0 win. Wendy Durrant

Another point gained for Briston when at the bottom, you have to take what positives you can. 1 point gained rather than 3 point lost! John Paul tied up Ian Brown whilst Howard struggled big time. Sean Molloy proved to be to good for Briston B Maybe next time for Briston B in a close match.

DIVISION 1 Div sec reports that new signing Jamie Macintosh, along with Dave Fordham took all their games against the Taverham side to take a 7-3 victory. All of the ten rubbers ended 3-0, an unusual card quickly input on the computer!

Nuorder B drew with Telephones A 5-5.
What a match !!! Telephones quickly took a 2-0 lead before Nuorder levelled at 2-2 with Andy Broughton & Jeremy Cocks engaging in a 40 minute war of attritian with Andy taking it 11-9 in th fifth. Furter wins by Phil Henry & John williams took Nuorder into a 4-2 lead but back came Telephones with Mark Ring beating Phil in another 5 setter to leave Phones 5-4 ahead. The evening would not have been complete without the deciding doubles going the distance with Andy & Phil edging home to force the draw. What a battle !!!!
