St Faiths Centre beat Telephones C 6-4.
As the match drew to a close at 11pm it was a game of two teams thoughts: Telephones wondering how they didn't come away with a well a well deserved draw and SFC wondering where did we dig that win up from,as they made it 7 wins out of 8. It was a match that swung to & fro down the card and by the end of the doubles it was tied at 3-3 Steve (I think I have flu) Johnson was unstoppable against Chris & with Martin ( is that a mobile i hear ) Butcher beating Barry in five games which made the score 5-3 to SFC, but back came Telephones again with Bob beating Darren to makr it 5-4. In the final gamr with Norman 2 games games up & coasting in the 3rd 2 points each looked like the outcome, but out of no where came Kevin with his trusty bat to steal the game from under Norman's nose and seal the 3 points for SFC Darren

CEYMS C pursuit of Premier A status faltered with an 8-2 defeat by Briston A. Wayne Mason for Briston was the difference between the teams with his first performance of the season with a maximum.CEYMS C can consider themselves a tad unlucky just losing all the 4 games which went to five sets.

In the Grant Matthewson Norwich & District Table Tennis League, the final week of matches before the Christmas break saw Wensum A storm to the top of Premier A with two emphatic 8 -2 wins against Gothic A and previously unbeaten Foxwood A. The most impressive victory was against Foxwood A, Lauren Spink and Ryan Collins were the heroes for Wensum A both gaining maximums in both matches. Who is going to stop Wensum in their quest for the title in their first season in the Premier A division?  CEYMS A moved into second spot with a 7-3 win over Wensum B2. Mats Olsson was the best player on the night with a 3 singles wins and the doubles with Ben Thompson to ensure a hard fought victory for CEYMS A.UEA take over at the top of Premier B after three 7-3 wins with Sam Collins and Matt Haynes both maintaining their 100% individual records for the students. Wensum C are hot on their heels after a close 6-4 win at Sands. Wensum skipper Jason Evans was the player of the night with an impressive maximum that included a 17-15 fifth leg win against Peter Read. Nuorder B eased their relegation fears after a 6-4 win at Firstline Factors for whom Terry Copland kept the home side in the match. Nuorder A were hammered 8-2 by Taverham A who had Wayne Lubbock and Andy Parker in good form. Hellesdon were indebted to a fine maximum from Mel Humphries when taking three points off Panthers at the Miller Hall. Panthers fought all the way with Mel Rooney and Kim Downes winning two apiece. Taverham C had a good draw, with their young player Tom Baldock-Yaxley playing well to take two singles.  With Barry Graver coming out of retirement to help out, Ex Choristers A clinched the draw with Paul Elsegood taking all his games. Missionaries went down 8-2, with Rhys Moore playing extremely well for the Returners. Andy Watson and Richard Westgate picked up a game each for the losers.  Electricity, with only two players, did well with a maximum from Dave Fordham, all in straight sets, and the doubles into the bargain, to grab a point from Gothic.  Fairfield A v Wensum D included a fine win in the fifth by Eric Thornton against Lindsay Dare and Jamie Leeder had a good game against Dale Ajeto, but finally lost 10-12 in the fourth.  Foxwood D overcame their first loss to Wensum E to outclass Newton Flotman A and retain top spot in Division 2.  Choppers inflicted a 9-1 defeat on Wensum Ewith Daniel Atkins saving the whitewash.  SFC just got the better of Telephones C 6-4 where 9 games went to 4 or 5 sets.  Remploy A are on a roll defeating Millermen 8-2 although match closer than the score suggests.  A Ross Gray maximum and taking both doubles eased RRMYC to a narrow 6-4 victory over Gothic D.  Ex Choristers 'B' jump back to the top of Division 3,  with two excellent 4 point wins. They beat Club 75  9-1 and then Remploy 'B' 8-2 to keep the pressure on second placed club YMCA who beat Thorpe St Andrew 6-4 to maintain their push for promotion.  High flying Easton were short of a player and suffered a 6-4 defeat at the hands of UEA 'C'.  Tankards won the battle of the bottom clubs beating The Gamblers 6-4 thanks to wins by Phil Heazle and Brian Dunhill with the last games of the night. In Division 4,a very entertaining and close match was won 6-4 by Taverham E over Foxwood E.  With the match at 3-3, Lenny Layt beat Dennis Calver only for Taverham to counter with 3 singles wins from David Dobson, Reg Juett and Shane Sivier.  The same Taverham side beat UEA E without dropping a set and remain unbeaten in the Division.  Len Layt and Sam Thompson scored well deserved maximums as Foxwood E beat Wensum G 7-3, both teams a mixture of youth and experience.  Game of the evening was a terrific hard hitting duel between the two number 4's with young Zane Axten winning in the 4th game.  For Wensum Pat Goss and Steven Cockburn were the only winners in singles but their sons Sol Goss and Chris Cockburn combined to win the second doubles.  Wensum H got revenge on Shelly Telly with an 8-2 win.  James Bootyman was delighted to beat the legendary Colin Jenkinson in a battle that went to 5 games. Wensum youngsters Finn Brocklesby and Alexander Richardson got some ties under their belt and Ian Howes stylish play was impressive.

DIVISION 1 A nice friendly match. A fine win in the fifth by Eric Thornton against Lindsay Dare after a long fight. Jamie Leeder had a good game against Dale Ajeto, but finally lost 10-12 in the fourth. A damper was put on the evening at the end, when we were told by Centre staff that we couldn't finish the doubles,such a shame as it was 7-9 in the fifth game and the time was about 10.25pm!

A match where the score does not reflect the competative nature and sheer quality of the play. Some of the rallies were stunning, with some of the individual shots just incredible! This was a match that had the dogged endeavour of Steve Sadd, the inspirational play of Andy Hawes succumbing to rapid fire of Lauren Spink and fire power of Ryan Collins. In the battle of the no. three's Tony defeated Kevin to ensure maximum points for Wensum. Who is going to stop Wensum A march to the title?

Neville got Sands off the mark and Peter followed up with two fine wins, including a 13-11 win in the fifth over Bob. At 5-3 Jason gained his maximum and three points for Wensum when beating Phil.

Firstline were quickly into their stride taking the first three games, then Nuorder began the fightback to take a 5-3 lead. This included Andy Broughton levelling the scores at 3-3 when beating Peter Wright for the very first time. Terry Copland closed the gap for Firstline before losing the doubles and the match.

The evening started with Roper v Karlsson providing some of the best rallies Premier A has seen? Ove just getting home in 4 close games. The young Wensum boys played with plenty of attitude which probably affected their game hopefully they will learn from this experience. Andy Hawes managed to out serve Ove Karlsson to achieve the only maximum of the nignt, he combined with Steve Sadd to take the doubles giving Foxwood A maximum points

Revenge is a dish best served cold and Wensum H chose a chilly December evening to get their own back on Shelly Telly who beat them in the first game of the season. James Bootyman was delighted to beat the legend that is Colin Jenkinson in a gladiatorial battle that went to 5 games. The Wensum youngsters Finn and Alexander got some ties under their belt and Ian's syylish play was impressive. No Christmas points for Shelly Telly then - Bah Humbug!! Michelle Savage

Panthers lost to Hellesdon YCOB 4-6.
Mel Humphries produced some excellent table tennis to take three points for Hellesdon against old foes Panthers. Mel was particulaly impressive in beating the in form Kim Downes in three straight sets. Kim was also never troubled in disposing of the very poor John Howlett and Roger Crossfield. Crossfield and Howlett also lost to consistent attacking play from Mel Rooney and both struggled to beat David Sprunt. Humphries & Howlett teamed up to take the doubles with some fine play.

Telephones fought superbly to take a point off UEA. It could have been closer still as both Andy Burton & Jeremy Cocks took unbeaten Sam Collins to 5 sets with Jeremy having 2 match points. Matt Haynes just too good througout the evening.

Park Lane fought to the bitter end but age & poor eyesight from 'Hendo' plus Philip's severe asthma attack were key factors in this comprehensive win by Wensum. Tony Zeqiri came of age with a very good performance.

A hard fought encounter with 7 of the ties going the full distance. High flying Foxwood players Mark Wilson and Carl Matthewson found themselves down 0-2 in games to Phil Clarke and Peter Read respectively, only to claw themselves to victory in five. All players on show won at least one singles with Foxwood just edging home.

Nuorder edged home agianst Firstline Factors to record a second consecutive win. A topsy turvey encounter with 'match of the night' being an epic long lasting battle and war of attrician between Peter Wright and Bob King, with many rallies lasting minutes, not seconds. Bob finally got home in four games to help secure 3 points.

A closer contest than the score line suggests. Match finished at 10.50. There were more edges and nets than usual which caused some minor anoyance (jonathon ) and tended to favour the home team more than the visitors.

T 5-0 down and with the games going to 5 sets Gothic thought thatit wasn't going to be their night, but inspired by a 2nd doubles win they fought on to take the next 4 games and draw the match. Another good team performance and a good night all round.

In the Grant Matthewson Norwich & District Table Tennis League, both Briston A and Hospital A moved out of the Premier A relegation zone this week. Briston A had a hard fought 6-4 win over the B side to leapfrog above them. The A side did not have it all their own way, star of the match was John Paul for the B side with a maximum plus winning the doubles for good measure with Jonathon Batchford. The A side had strength in depth however with Robin Thaxter, John Hancock and Gerry Rudley all taking two singles each to ensure the win.  Hospitals A had a very close match with Gothic A just getting home 6-4, Hospitals had Martin Gray to thank for the victory with his three singles wins and the doubles with Martin Freeland. He was made to fight all the way in one of his singles just getting home 11-9 in the fifth against a much more consistent Chris Durrant for Gothic.The top match in Premier B saw Nuorder A beat their B side by the narrowest of margins 6-4 with skipper Bob King in maximum form for the winners whilst Phil Henry and John Williams each won a brace of singles for the losers. Whilst Foxwood C and UEA were taking maximum points off Taverham B and Hellesdon respectively, Wensum C dropped two valuable promotion points to the inconsistent Gothic B. Dave Marrison beat the impressive William Lawes and teamed up with Gothic player of the night Paul Pegg to take the doubles for a deserved draw. Sands B were indebted to the returning Peter Read for an excellent performance in securing two points against a rejuvenated Telephones A side who continue to claw themselves away from the relegation zone. In Division 1, high flying Gothic were bombarded by Missionaries, as Andy Watson surprised himself with a maximum, enabling Missionaries to overcome Gothic with a fine 6-4 win. Newcomer Dave Darkins played well in his debut for Gothic, with two wins, including victory over Mary Sawyer. In a very close match, Telephones needed both doubles to gain a draw after CEYMS D’s  Andy Bonham won all three singles.  Gothic D and Millermen shared the spoils in the match of the season in Division 2.  Millermen stormed into a 5-0 lead but Gothic fought back in a match where 7 games went to 5 sets.  Choppers just managed to defeat Telephones C and rise to 2nd position.  RRMYC had the advantage of the nets and edges to overcome struggling NCC. In Division 3, Ex Choristers 'B'  jump back ahead of YMCA to head the division after two excellent 4 point wins over UEA 'C' 9-1  and The Gamblers 10-0. The battle of the week saw Steve Gurton maintaining his top position in the averages with an excellent win over the undefeated Roland Marton of YMCA. However YMCA won 6-4 overall thanks to a Darren Phillips final game win over Richard Rump. Thanks to a Jack Harrowing maximum Easton achieved a 7-3 win over Remploy 'B' as they push for the top.  The UEA 'C' students had a mixed week winning two excellent games 8-2 against lowly placed Tankards and 7-3 against Club 75 although in their next game they were soundly trounced 9-1 by league leaders Ex Choristers 'B'. In a closely contested draw in Division 4, Foxwood E struggled against a determined Shelly Telly team for whom Colin Jenkinson and Jeanette Baxter scored maximums. Foxwood’s young Zane Axten saved the day with a maximum to help gain the draw.  Taverham E moved to the top of the table and there were mixed fortunes for the two Wensum Division 4 teams with the H team scoring an excellent 9-1 win over UEA E but the G team going down to an equally impressive 9-1 from Taverham.  Wendy Durrant

Jeremy Cocks put Telephones up with a five set win over Neville Beckett, Peter Read then levelled with a win over Mark Ring. Games went to and fro and with the scores level at 3-3 Peter completed an excellent maximumwith a 11-9 fifth set win against Jeremy. Sands went into a 5-3 lead only for Telephones to take the remaining ties to earn a draw.

Although beaten heavily, Taverham were not disgraced as they made their high flying visitors work very hard for thier victory. This was demonstrated by the titanic 17-19 score in the secocond game between Sandeep Nene and Carl Matthewson. Geoff Cook scored Taverham's solitary win with an excellent win against Carl. Man of the match was Mark Wilson.

DIVISION 1 A very close match with Andy Bonham winning all three singles. Telephones clinched the doubles to halve the match, which concluded a great evening.

Wensum B drew with Gothic A 5-5.
Wensum B & Gothic A fought out a draw probably more pleased were Gothic who only had 2 players after a late call off by Alan Jones. Owe Karlsson took a maximum as usual but was made to fight all the way by Chris Durrant just getting home 11-9 in the fifth.

Fairfield B beat UEA D 8-2.
The last six games all went Fairfield's was to secure an 8 - 2 victory. Olu looked like his "old" young self!

Match Report - Gothic A v United Norwich Hospitals A

Gothic A lost to United Norwich Hospitals A 4-6.
Martin Gray maximum including doubles give Hospitals A the edge in 6-4 win over Gothic A. He was made to fight all the way by Paul Pegg in a five set match. A brace for both Chris & Paul Durrant keeps the match undecided till the doubles.

Foxwood E drew with Shelly Telly 5-5.
In a closely contested natch Foxwood E struggled against a determined Shelly Telly team. Both Lenny Layt and Brian Beck found Colin Jenkinson and Jeanette Baxter too strong. Having lost the first doubles, it was up to young Zane Axten to save the match with a well deserved maximum.

Mark Dare came out of retirement due to the illness and unavailability of players, his performance reminded him why he had retired, coupled with his bad back when trying to get out of bed next morning ensured he will think twice before helping the A team out again.However Lauren Spink continued her good form ably supported by Tony Zeqiri both gained maximums to ensure a win for Wensum A

Briston A beat Briston B 6-4.
In a hard fought match Briston A narrowly gained a win over their B side. Man of the match however was John Paul for the B side with a maximum in the singles and teaming up with Jonathon Batcheford to take the doubles as well. A good all round team performance from the A side with each player gaining 2 singles wins each.

Missionaries beat Gothic C 6-4.
DIVISION 1 High flying Gothic bombarded by Missionaries, as their Andy Watson surprised himself with a maximum.This enabled Missionaries to overcome Gothic with a fine 6-4 win. A good match played in really good spirit. Dave Darkins played well in his debut in this division with two wins, including a win against Mary Sawyer.

Hellesdon return home ponitless from the UEA sports centre after an emphatic win for the talented UEA side. Both Matt Haynes and Sam Collins were in a different class and will be looking forward to life in Premier A next season.

Nuorder A beat Nuorder B 6-4.
Bob King was the hero of the hour in this battle between Nuorder A & B. An impressive singles maximum was followed by an excellent doubles win with Ian Taylor over the hard to beat Phil Henry and Andy Broughton. The B side had to rely on Phil Henry and John Williams to keep them in the game with a brace of wins each. An important 3 points and the first win for Nuorder A since the opening day of the season.

Well done to Remploy A for winning on the night against Newton Flotman A who are lacking in all spirit at the moment. There were some close games but Newton Flotman cannot get it together.
